For the time being, I’m mostly a dad and a breadwinner, but here are a few things I believe in, with links to my favorite organizations.

ENDING HUNGER

A billion people live in abject poverty while most Americans enjoy lives of plenty and prosperity.  It doesn’t have to be this way. Here are ways you can make a big difference at little cost to you.

The Hunger Site - Click on this site every day, and advertisers pay for cups of food for the world’s neediest. It takes only seconds. Other worthy causes listed at the top of the site let you pay for medical care for the world’s poorest children, free mammograms for low-income American women, and books for needy children. You can even help save rainforest land and help stray animals. www.thehungersite.com

Living Water International - A child dies every 15 seconds because of a lack of clean water. Meanwhile, Americans spend $61 billion each year on soft drinks - more than 15 times what the entire government spends on aid for needy people overseas. LWI is a Christian organization that digs wells across the world.  Giving ten dollars to this organization can make a huge difference in people’s lives. www.water.cc

Kiva - Wish you could be your own philanthropic organization?  With Kiva, you can.  Kiva allows you to pool your resources with other Americans and make no-interest loans to entrepreneurs in the developing world.  One hundred Americans giving $10 each can help a hard-working, risk-taking individual create a better life for his or her family and create jobs in his or her community. www.kiva.org

One - One is asking governments of wealthy nations like ours to do more to help the world’s poorest people.  Giving people hope for a better life is the most cost-effective way our government can create a more peaceful world. www.one.org

ENDING ILLITERACY

IN ARKANSAS

Hundreds of thousands of adult Arkansans lack the literacy and language skills they need simply to step onto the first rung of the ladder of success.  Theirs is a world where job applications, drug prescriptions, road maps, bedtime stories and Bible verses are simply beyond understanding.  How did they get in this predicament?  Doesn't matter.

Thanks to Arkansas Literacy Councils, thousands of volunteer tutors are helping thousands of adult students learn the literacy and language skills they must have to survive.  You can help make a difference by donating to the cause or by becoming a volunteer tutor. www.arkansasliteracy.org

FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY

The national debt has now reached $9 trillion. That’s $30,000 for every United States citizen. Moreover, each of us owes $4,000 to the Chinese. But instead of making hard choices, we’re just passing this problem along to our children and grandchildren. It’s time for Americans to demand our government do the right thing and spend no more than it takes in. The Concord Coalition can give you the facts you need. www.concordcoalition.org
